松井は２年連続球宴出場を目指し、思わぬ延長戦に臨むことになった。
メッツ戦の試合前、ヤンキースのロッカールームで、球宴のア・リーグ監督を
務めるトーリ監督が、ナインのうち球宴出場が決まった６選手と、惜しくも
落選した松井とポサダ（捕手）に選出結果を伝えた。
トーリ監督が「松井が選ばれなかったのには驚いた。今回は選出された選
手より先に、松井とポサダに選ばれていないことを伝えなければならなかった」
と苦悩の表情。松井は「ＯＫ」とだけこたえたという。
